Art

Art this half term is a great topic! We are looking at Print making. Children are introduced to printmaking by looking at Hogarth’s series of prints Industry and Idleness. They consider how printmaking allows the production of many copies of one image which can be cheaply produced. They go on to consider different printmaking processes looking at examples by famous artists: screen printing by Warhol, relief printing (in particular, wood cuts) by Hokusai and intaglio printing (dry-point and etching) by Rembrandt.

History

This half term’s history topic is the Industrial Revolution. This unit builds on chronologically from children’s knowledge of both the French Revolution and the Transatlantic Slave Trade. During the Slave Trade unit, the children learned about how Britain imported and exported goods at this time. This unit builds on from children’s learning in geography, where children will be able to apply vocabulary previously taught in this discipline such as towns, cities, urban, rural and agriculture. During this unit, the children will look at the similarities and differences between the impact that the Industrial Revolution had on the lives of the rich and the poor; a theme that has been explored across the curriculum.

Geography

Our topic for this half term is studying New Zealand and the Pacific. Building on knowledge from the previous unit studying Australia, children will study New Zealand and the South Pacific Islands, looking at both physical and human geographical features of the region.

Science

This half-term the children will be learning about Astronomy in Science. They will learn that the word astronomy comes from the Greek word astron meaning ‘star’. Therefore, astronomy is the science that studies the laws of the stars and everything in universe beyond the Earth’s atmosphere. The substantive concepts of this unit are motion, force, energy, matter and space.

Music

The children will be continuing their flute lessons with a specialist teacher.

PE

The children will be engaging with Premier Sport in a Athletics unit on a Wednesday. On Friday, the children will be learning the skills required to play Netball.

R.E.

In R.E. the children will be answering the big question: How far does faith enable resilience (Christians, Muslims, Jews, non-religious, others)?

P.S.H.E

In P.S.H.E the children are focusing on the unit – Healthy me. The children will be learning about the importance of being aware of mental health and recognising when their own mental health may need support.
