Nursery and Reception

Topic

This half term’s topic is: Stories of the Past.

This unit will introduce children to some fascinating story types including fairy tales, legends, Ancient Greek myths, fables and folk tales. Children will see that stories have been told for many, many years and begin to appreciate that some stories can teach us important things. We will look at some traditional fairytales like Jack and the Beanstalk, but also some trickier texts like the Ancient Greek Myth; Prometheus and the fire, learning lots from them all but having fun along the way too.



Phonics and Literacy

In our phonics, all reception children are learning the initial codes. They have been introduced to all the below sounds-

Unit 1: a, i, m, s, t : /a/ as in cat, /i/ as in pin, /m/ as in map, /s/ as in sip, /t/ as in ten.

Unit 2: n, o, p: /n/ as in not, /o/ as in pop, /p/ as in pen.

Unit 3: b, c, g, h : /b/ as in big, /k/ as in cup, /g/ as in get, /h/ as in hen.

Unit 4: d, e, f, v: /d/ as in dog, /e/ as in egg, /f/ as in fox, /v/ as in van

Unit 5: k, l, r, u: /k/ as in kit, /l/ as in log, /r/ as in run, /u/ as in up

Unit 6: j, w, z: /j/ as in jug, /w/ as in win, /z/ as in zip

Unit 7: x, y, ff, ll, ss, zz : /x/ as in fox (said to sound like ks), /y/ as in yes, /ff/ as in huff, /ll/ as in hill, /ss/ as in miss, /zz/ as in buzz.

We have also been introduced to tricky words/ High frequency words- are, all, of, was, the, I, for.

We will now be consolidating our understanding and confidence of reading and writing/ blending and segmenting these sounds and words.

We will continue focusing on letter formation in our discreet handwriting sessions and we will be focusing on writing words and simple sentences now in our literacy sessions. This term our key texts are How to Catch a Star, Whatever next and Meet the planets. 


Maths

Reception will be taking a deeper dive and focus on numbers up to 20, grouping and sharing and making

connections. Nursery will be looking at matching shapes and blocks, making patterns and counting 6.

Summer Term

Dali class art - Jackson Pollock

This half term we have been looking at the art of Jackson Pollock. We created our own masterpieces in the style of Jackson Pollock using melted chocolate.
