Year One and Year Two
English
We will be looking at Greek Myths and in particular the stories of In the Beginning and Pandora’s Box, and Persephone and the Pomegranate Seeds. The children will be consolidating writing simple and compound sentences using nouns, verbs and adjectives, as well as co-ordinating conjunctions and, but and so. Year 2 will be learning how to use subordinate conjunctions effectively within their writing.
We will also be continuing with cursive handwriting and Sounds Write to continue their phonic knowledge.
Maths
In Maths this term, Year 1 will be learning about Place Value to 20 and 50, Addition and subtraction to 20 and length and height. Year 2 will be consolidating their knowledge of money, multiplication and division and length and height. All children will also be engaging in the learning of the times tables.
Science
In Science, the children will be learning about Astronomy and will be introduced to the planets of our solar system and will begin to understand orbit and rotation. They will begin to understand why there is life on earth, but not similar life on other planets pupils. The children will then look beyond the stars and the formations they make in the sky. They will learn that constellations are groups of stars in the sky.
Geography
The children will be investigating The British Isles and it’s islands, coastlines, beaches and cliffs. They will learn about urban and rural areas of Scotland and harbours and ports. They will learn that some areas of Wales have mountains and valleys and will also begin to understand that weather can be different in regions of the British Isles.
Art
The children will be looking at portraits and self-portraits considering how each painter uses skin-tones to show light and shade on the subject’s face. They will learn an artist can choose to represent a person’s personality, emotions, interests and status. The children will then paint their own self-portrait, learning about the proportions of the face, and how to recreate skin-tones. They will consider how they can choose to represent themselves, by choosing what to put in the background of their portrait and then they will be evaluating what they think of the self-portrait they have created.
DT
In DT, the children will be making their own pencil cases. In doing this they will learn the process of design, the features of a pencil case—how they work, size, materials, fastenings, shape, joining and decorating, investigate using suitable materials, learning the properties of different materials, making products with fabric, joining fabric together—sewing and gluing, as well as creating stiches with a needle and thread.
RE
The children will be learning about Worldwide Christian Values. The children will apply their understanding to the ways in which key individuals have lived their lives. They will consider how life has influenced the person they are studying. They will be learning about how hard life was in Britain in the 1700s, be introduced to the life of Thomas Clarkson, learn the story of The Good Samaritan, the work of The Samaritans and study Local Christian community.
PSHE
In PSHE, the children will be learning about Diversity and Communities. This will include similarities, difference and diversity, respecting and valuing others, the way we live, respecting their neighbourhood, our and others’ beliefs, their routines, customs and traditions of culture, race and religion.
PE
In PE, the children will be learning gymnastics. This includes making shapes with their body, learning stillness, points of contact, transference of body weight, linking positions together and body symmetry.
Music
In Music, the children are learning by listening to different parts of Peter and the Wolf by Prokofiev. They will be composing a piece, as a class, based around it by exploring how composers can use themes (or musical ideas) or different instruments to represent different characters. They will together as a class to develop their own music which will incorporate these elements, using tuned and untuned percussion.
