Music

Music education is celebrated at St. Mary's and has a high profile in daily school life. The children sing daily in worship and in playground games, along with a weekly singing in the hall as a whole school. The children are taught a range of hymns, children's songs, Christmas Carols and we've even had a bit of Bruno Mars and Kool and the Gang!

Music across the curriculum is taught by class teachers using the PKC programme. The progression of skills and knowledge for this can be found below. 

In Key Stage 2 (years 3 to 6), children are taught by a specialist teacher, either Mr. Nobel or Mr. Randall. All children have 4 years of instrumental tuition, funded by the school, on the recorder, ukulele and flute. Children at St. Mary's become highly proficient in reading, playing and performing music. Our flautists are supported to enter exams and leave St. Mary's with at least grade 1 flute with the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music (ABRSM). 

Regular concerts are held to showcase music learning at St. Mary's, at the end of each term. Parents, volunteers and the winder community and invited to attend. It's a super opportunity for us to come together as a school and celebrate our achievements through music.

Appreciating music is an important part of our music education offer at St. Mary's. All children at St. Mary's listen to a range of music. Here is a list of 100 pieces all children should listen to by Year 6, with thanks to Classic FM radio.
